Abstract
The poetry of Miguel Torga contains certain references to the cultural and literary patrimony of the Middle Ages as a way of national affirmation. Through the character of King Dinis, the author relates his country to a historically honourable past (to a golden age). He presents this monarch under a halo of mythification and across multiple dimensions: king, poet, prophet, farmer, founder and settler. He praises his value as an example of portugalidade and a model for the construction of a glorious future. In fact, Miguel Torga has explicitly declared that he possesses the interest of a palaeontologist that looks for the roots to explain the essence and the destiny of the Portuguese man.
