Abstract
The foreigner Diotima of Mantineia from Plato’s O Banquete inspired Hölderlin in the writing of Hipérion ou o Eremita da Grécia. The speech of that character reflects about love and poetry, while the German poet’s writing, Diotima, when placed in an intermediate space between the greatness of ancient Greece and the social developments of the late eighteenth century, assumes a symbolism that is also exploited by Portuguese poets. In this dual perspective, we study the intertextual relationships with poems written by Maria Teresa Dias Furtado, Fernando Pinto do Amaral, Herberto Helder and Manuel Gusmão.
