Abstract
This paper approaches Penelope’s figure and her progressive construction from character to myth, as a very important symbol of universal fidelity and feminine wittiness. Build on Odyssey, where she originally appears, with a distinguishing and exemplar character, Penelope has been seen by different authors in different times, such as in Corpus Priapeorum or by authors from Portuguese Language, such as Eça de Queirós, Casimiro de Brito, Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, DavidMourão Ferreira, Daniel Faria, Manuel Alegre, Arménio Vieria e João Melo. This paper will indicate that the vision these authors have about Penelope it’s mainly the same as Homer’s, mostly symbolized by the importance of the “web” and how the figure constitutes a myth almost never changed in its functionality.
