Abstract
This paper illustrates the application of the Mental Spaces Model to the analysis of certain verb forms of Brazilian Portuguese. Essential elements that constitute the model are introduced as indispensable for the understanding of verb tenses. Also introduced as indispensable for such understanding are a few concepts from Cognitive Linguistics, the theoretical framework to which the Mental Spaces Model affiliates. The Mental Spaces Model have theoretical resources that are appropriate for modelling actual discourse and the diagrams constructed according to this model allow partial visualization of cognitive processes that underlie linguistic/discourse manifestations (Fauconnier 1994, 1997 e Cutrer 1994). More specifically, this article exemplifies the use of the Mental Spaces Model for the analysis and explanation of a phenomenon of language in use, namely, variation in the semantic values of certain verb forms in relation to their prototypical value. The diagrams realized in the scope of this research reveal motivation of a cognitive character for such variation, which results in values here called non canonical.
