Although Nebrija is not only an historian, and he excelled more in other subjects, he wrote two history books: Decades duae and Bellum Navariense, published in 1545 by his son, when Nebrija had already dead. In these books he uses exempla, figures that, from Antiquity had become an important resource in education, discourses and over all in historiography, where they were used to entertain, to teach and to move. In this article we study how the exempla were used in the prologues of the historic books of Nebrija so as to delight, but specially as an argument to criticize other historians, and to defend his work as a chronicler, because using exempla he shows that he is the best to narrate the iusta bella undertaken by Catholic Spanish kings.
