Abstract
This article proposes some preliminary questions concerning the initial work of the writers Camilo Castelo Branco and Eça de Queirós, in order to verify important features of the rise of the novel and its consolidation in Portugal. Through the perspective of comparative literature, we intend to analyze some aspects regarding the rise of the genre “roman-feuilleton” in Portugal seen in its direct relationship with the rise and pinnacle of the French roman-feuilleton. We will therefore trace a short analysis of the genre and its consequences in Portuguese literature, as well as a comparative analysis between the novels Les mystères de Paris (1844), by Eugène Sue, Os mistérios de Lisboa (1854), by Camilo Castelo Branco, and O Mistério da Estrada de Sintra (1870), by Eça de Queirós e Ramalho Ortigão.
