Abstract
The Spanish military presence in Italy, the religious wars against the Reformists and the colonial politics of the cross and the sword gave rise to an irenic movement headed by Erasmus and supported by remarkable Spanish Humanists (Luis Vives, Valdes) and Portuguese (D. Pires, D. de Góis and D. de Teive) who are in two minds between the service to their kings and the ecumenical principles of peace and tolerance.
