11.2 O avesso do épico

Álvaro Cardoso Gomes

Abstract

This article focuses on the Portuguese travel books and, more specifically, the História trágico-marítima by Bernardo de Brito, a late work published in the 18th century, in which the author narrates the great maritime disasters that took place in Portuguese sea conquests. The article demonstrates that the author not only makes a major contribution as a historian, by faithfully describing the preparations and the routes of the sea voyages, as well as disease on board and shipwreck details, but also imparts a quality of “literariness” to his texts, by enhancing the human element and casting a critical look at the seafaring enterprise.
